Our House the Musical
Description
"The show featured songs from the ska/pop band Madness, and was named after one of their most popular hit singles, "Our House". The script for the musical, written by Tim Firth, told a tale of modern-day love set on the streets of London. It followed two different possible courses in the life of a young man, Joe, following his involvement in petty crime. [2] Members of Madness played roles in the executive production of the show, and Madness frontman Suggs performed in the production for a while as the central character's father.
Despite winning the 2003 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical, it received mixed reviews from critics and closed after less than 10 months.[3] A recorded version of the original production was broadcast on BBC Three in December 2003 and was released on DVD on November 1, 2004. [4] In July 2006, a new production of the show toured Japan; starting in Tokyo. A UK revival is being staged from May 2008 starting at Birmingham Repetory Theatre, followed by a national tour." -Wikepedia

The maverick label created in London in 1976 by entrepreneurs Dave Robinson and Andrew Jakeman also released the UK's first punk records and provided a home for misfits such as Ian Dury and the Blockheads, Lene Lovich, The Pogues, Devo and many more. Stiff had billed themselves as "The World's Most Flexible Record Label". Other slogans were "We came. We saw. We left." and "If it ain't Stiff it ain't worth a fuck.

For this Teaching Challenge, Madness frontman Suggs returns to his old school with the hope of passing on the songwriting skills that helped make his band so successful.
He makes his way to Quintin Kynaston School in north London. This time though, instead of misbehaving as he used to, Suggs takes on the challenge of teaching today's pupils. Will he succeed?
The band Madness became famous for their videos and extraordinary anthems about ordinary lives. One of their biggest selling hits was the song Baggy Trousers, which celebrated the art of school mischief as practised by members of the band in their youth.

The Kinks influence on Madness...
Description
From The Kinks to Madness!From the Village Green Preservation Society to The Small channel and Fall! The class of the pop British! For a long time, one associates The Kinks and Madness, in their approach of the texts, of the subjects tackled in the songs, their way of speaking about people, of telling stories, their description of certain characters, speaking about great subjects without seeming to touch there, by the means of ordinary people. In addition, apart from their very English side, one can find bcp other common points between these 2 groups: the 2 come from the north of London and give the characters and with their district a great importance... Regardez the clip of Dead End Street and that of It must Be coils! January 8, 2008, in the docu of Paul Morley "Pop what is it good for?" diffused on the BBC 4, Suggs, singer of Madness, evoked the importance which Kinks had on Madness and more particularly it speaks about Lola, one of great successes of Kinks. Since 79 Madness takes again Lola, into 2005 their recovery is finally lying on the album the Dangermen sessions. This song of Kinks evokes the transsexuality, precisely the meeting of the narrator and a transsexual in a club with Soho. (to be noted that the face B, Berkeley Mews, are superb also!)

Two Tone Britain - Documentary (2004)
Description
Two Tone Britain, narrated by Mark Lamarr, tells the story of the movement which centred around the Coventry record label Two Tone in the late 70s and early 80s. As the label's founders, The Specials are naturally given most of the limelight, but attention is also paid to Madness, The Selecter and The Beat, amongst others.
Not only about music, Two Tone's wider cultural and political significance is very much at the heart of the programme. At a time of desperate divisions between whites, blacks and Asians, Two Tone fostered a disregard for skin colour and actively promoted interracial mixing and a collective and inclusive ethos.
